Kunisada: Sumo Wrestler Kagamiiwa Hamanosuke Crouches in the Ring (鏡岩濱之助)
Artist: Utagawa Kunisada I (1786-1864)
Title: Sumo Wrestler Kagamiiwa Hamanosuke (鏡岩濱之助) Date: 1853
The top-ranked Kagamiiwa Hamanosuke II crouches in the ring, his expression unperturbed as he seems to size up his unseen opponent. This wrestler used this name between 1838-1856, retiring in 1856. He was ranked Ozeki within the top division, Makuuchi, one of the top 42 wrestlers in his sport. His name is written upper right in the red cartouche that is in the shape of the fan held by the referee in the ring. This work has unusually nice printing for a sumo print; the deep indigo background is even covered in sparkling mica.
