Title: Nakamura Shikan as Toba-e no Masuroku and Giant Rat
Date: 1860

The kabuki actor Nakamura Shikan IV as Toba-e no Masuroku, who looks rather perplexed as he gazes stage right, his informal robe hanging open and hand on his head. Behind him an actor in a rat costume places a paw on his neck, seemingly unseen by Masuroku. There is terrific blindprinting on the rat’s costume, mimicking the texture of fabric. From the (shosagoto/dance-drama) play Kikkô Dengo Shiki no Kumiito, staged at the Morita theater in 1860. One feels that this must be a rather lighthearted, amusing scene.

Condition: Excellent impression and color. Very good condition. Unbacked. Small stain near rat’s paw.
