Title: Nakamura Shikan IV as priest Mongaku under the Waterfall.

Series: Mitate Nachi no Taki 瀧
Date: 1875

Gripping portrait of Mongaku Shonin doing penance under the Nachi Waterfall. These mitate seem to be something like fantasy roles for the public’s favorite actors, maybe akin to fantasy football of today. We see Mongaku doing penance under the icy torrent of Nachi waterfall after murdering Kesa Gozen. His hands are clasped in prayer and he clenches in his mouth the bell used by certain sects of Buddhism. His expression is one of complete focus, and he seems to be holding a mie, or kabuki pose. He has perhaps tied himself in place, as we see lengths of rope around his waist and looping over his arms. Beautifully printed, with mica additions to the waterfall–this is the highlight of the series.
