Title: Ichikawa Danjuro with Tattoo Shirt and Waterfall

Date: 1875
Series: Mitate Suikoden Torodai (Mitate Suikoden with Waterfalls)

Mitate (fantasy depiction) of Ichikawa Danjuro as Sanjo; he holds a long object with red writing against a black lacquer ground and is posed in front of a waterfall. His outer robe has been pulled down below his waist; he wears a light inner shirt with a tattoo pattern of a tiger and bamboo. He looks up at a note that has been attached to an outcropping of rock next to the waterfall. Prints that showed imaginary portraits of popular actors seemed quite popular in the late 19th century–perhaps akin to today’s fantasy football. The deep blue of the waterfall has beautiful mica.
