Koson 小原古邨 : Two Herons Wading in the Rain (1st edition) (Sold)
Artist: Ohara Kōson (1877-1945)
Title: Two Herons Wading in the Rain (First edition)
Date: Ca. 1900-1910
Two grey herons (Ardea cinera) wade in the shallows during a downpour. One is in stalking pose and one seems to be calling, beak upturned towards some creature above it. The lotus plants may be seen floating on the surface of the water, a translucent green as seen through the mist of rain. The rain itself is beautifully rendered and falls in irregular curtains. Works published by Kokkeido are considered some of his earliest, and although none of them bear dates they were produced ca. 1900-1910. Kokkeido is also the name for Akiyama Buemon, who published Yoshitoshi’s masterpiece series “One Hundred Aspects of the Moon”. Stunning, Early First EditionThis work has never been framed and is in unusually fine condition for a work that is from early in Koson’s career. Quite scarce, especially in this condition.
