Koson 小原古邨 : Two Geese Swimming 鵞鳥 (First Edition)
Artist: Ohara Kōson (1877-1945)
Title: Two Geese Swimming Near Shore 鵞鳥, 1st edition Date: 1928
Two white geese are shown swimming, their paddling feet visible propelling them forward towards an unseen goal. Exceptionally printed, with the reflections of the white geese combined with the forward eddies on the surface of the water. The water also features woodgrain, which somehow also helps to create the feeling of waves. The white geese themselves have blindprinting along with a soft pink color block delineating their feathers. With the earliest Watanabe seal for this work (lower right), in use between 1924 and 1930, indicating a first edition. With “Made in Japan” seal affixed as a label verso. This seal was required on works exported in from Japan in the late 1920s and 1930s.
