Koson 小原古邨 : Lapwing on a Tree Stump
Artist: Ohara Koson (1877-1945)
Title: Lapwing on a Tree Stump
Date: ca. 1920s-1930s
A northern lapwing (Vanellus vanellus) stands on the end of a diagonal log, one leg raised as it gazes intently to its left. This design is noted for its painterly affect, which was a strength of Koson, who was known as an excellent painter. The purple accents on the wing and the soft orange on the underbelly of the bird show that this work is completely unfaded. There are a few subtly embossed feathers on the breast, all in white. He is perched above a calm body of water, and willows hang with elegance in the background. With the “Made in Japan” seal verso that indicates that this work was printed and intended for export before WWII; the seal was only in use between the late 1920s and the mid 1930s.
Condition: Excellent impression, color and condition. There are some very minor foxing spots that are barely visible.
