Koson 小原古邨 : Goshawk Chasing Prey (RESERVED)
Artist: Ohara Koson (1877-1945)
Title: Goshawk Chasing Prey in the Rain: Horizontal format Date: ca. 1910
A goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) streaks through the rain, eyes intent on the prey bird whose shadow is seen at left, behind some painterly grains whose laden heads bend in the wind. The goshawk’s white wings are half-closed, indicating that it has dropped down from a greater height, and its raptor focus has been captured effectively by the artist. These works that bear the Kokkeido (Akiyama Buemon) seal were never reprinted in following decades, and are considered Koson’s earliest and rarest works. The horizontal o-tanzaku format is certainly challenging to an artist, and here is very well-suited to the composition.
