Koson 小原古邨 : Eagle with Outspread Wings 鷲 (Sold)
Artist: Ohara Koson (1877-1945)
Title: An Eagle About to Take Flight 鷲
Date: Ca. 1910-1923.
An eagle (Aquila spec.) with outspread wings prepares take flight, clearly about to chase the small bird that is shown hightailing it away at lower left. We see two small tree branches falling from higher up, so we must assume that the eagle has just crashed through the trees on its way to this perch, as details like this are intentionally included by the artist as part of the visual story. Taken with the intensely focused stare of the eagle and its pose just the second before takeoff, Koson has made this quite a dramatic composition, which is appropriate for such a dramatic predator. The yellow on the small bird is completely unfaded, and it would disappear if exposed to light for very long. It is possible that this is a Japanese Golden Eagle, which is now sadly an endangered species due to habitat loss.
Condition: Excellent impression, color and condition. Untrimmed and unfaded, with beautiful woodgrain in the sky.
