Koson 小原古邨 : Crossbill on a Tree Branch (Sold)
Artist: Ohara Kōson (1877-1945)
Title: Crossbill on a Tree Branch
Date: Ca. 1910
A red crossbill (Loxia curvirostra) perches on the branch of tree, its distinctive crossed bill shown in profile. It perches on a tree that seems to have round red berries, as the season already seems to be late autumn as judging by the leaves. One of Koson’s best designs in the opinion of this dealer, and scarce to find as well. It is featured as the cover image on a Japanese publication on the artist. Works published by Kokkeido are considered some of his earliest, although none of them bear dates.
