Koitsu: Tea Shop at Kiyomizu-do, Ueno (Sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Tsuchiya Kōitsu (1870-1949)
Title: Ueno, Kiyomizu-do Tea Shop at Kiyomizu dera (Tokyo)
Date: 1938 (this edition ca. 1950)

A young woman, perhaps a waitress, faces the evening wind at a tea stand near the Kiyomizu temple in Ueno (Tokyo) that was modeled after the famous Kiyomizudera in Kyoto. The scene is beautifully lit with a yellow glow from the hanging lanterns at right. Additional touches like the flags and steam moving in the wind make this work unusually atmospheric. The seal at left reads Doi Hangaten, which indicates that this work was printed shortly after WWII, probably around 1950. These are the same seals that are in the Art Institute of Chicago example.

Would make the perfect gift for the Japanophile in your circle.
