Koitsu: Sacred Bridge at Nikko 日光神橋 (Sold)
Artist: Tsuchiya Kōitsu (1870-1949)
Title: Sacred Bridge at Nikko 日光神橋
Date: 1937 (this edition ca. late 1940s)
The famous Shinkyo bridge at Nikko crosses the flowing Daiyagawa river. It stands at the entrance to Nikko’s shrines and temples, and is considered one of Japan’s most beautiful bridges. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here we see it in springtime, with a fine rain falling. Two visitors may be glimpsed at left. The seal at left reads Doi Hangaten, which indicates that this work was printed shortly after WWII, probably around 1950, although the late 1940s is also possible. See MFA Boston for their example of this design.
