Koitsu: Evening at Ushigome (Sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Tsuchiya Kōitsu (1870-1949)
Title: Evening at Ushigome
Date: 1939

A beauty in traditional garb walks along a quiet street lined with discreet wooden storefronts during a rainy evening, passing beneath the inviting orange glow of a shop lantern. This charming prewar scene changed drastically after the war, when Ushigome became part of Shinjuku ward in Tokyo, which now contains Shinjuku station, the busiest railway station in the world. Shinjuku is now emblematic of modern Tokyo, and it is almost impossible to imagine this scene today when walking in that bustling part of the city. The seal at left reads Doi Hangaten, which indicates that this work was printed shortly after WWII, probably around 1950.
