Profile of a young woman against a deeply textured, ochre ground. Her mien seems slightly defiant, although her features kept mostly a mystery as Saito has chosen to allow her to keep her mood and thoughts to herself. In his inimitable way, Saito manages to convey a strong mood using the rich textures of his woodblocks. The prominent woodgrain here gives so much depth; its pattern seems almost like an emphasis of the sitter’s spine. As always, the “simplicity” of Saito’s work overlays a sophisticated mastery of design.  From a limited edition of 100; titled, dated and numbered in pencil by the artist at bottom.
