Kiyochika: Summer Moon at Imado (Sold)
Artist: Kobayashi Kiyochika
Title: Summer Moon at Imado
Series: Untitled series on places in Tokyo
Date: 1881
A woman tunes her shamisen, looking out at the moon rising above the river. Kiyochika showed the transformation from traditional to modern Japan in fascinating ways. He not only showed new items like this western-style lantern, but used strong shadows and other western techniques in his prints to also emphasize the modern and exotic, which was becoming the norm at light speed. There are several color versions of this print. In this extremely early impression, the moon is a soft yellow and the horizon is a lavender easing to grey in a soft arc. The overall printing quality is much finer and the colors both brighter and more subtle than is found in later impressions. The finest example of this design that this dealer can remember seeing.
