Lt. General Yamaji Motoharu relaxes with a smoke as shadowy troops celebrate on a promontory behind him. Known as the “One-eyed Dragon”, he commanded the troops that attacked Port Arthur and committed atrocities in the wake of the victory. 60,000 Chinese were estimated to have been killed in the attack, including civilians. Lt. General Yamaji was described by the Japanese as “the very incarnation of the Japanese knightly spirit”.
