Kunichika: Swimming With Scroll (Sold)
Artist: Toyohara Kunichika
Title: Swimming With Scroll
Series: Thirty-six Virtuous or Evil Beauties (Zen Aku Sanjuroku Bijin)
Date: 1876
A woman on a mission clasps the oar of a boat (?), a scroll clenched between her teeth. In the background we see boats in the evening distance, probably searching for her. Perhaps she is delivering an important message and swims to evade the enemy. By the look of her face and by her mussy hair we may surmise that she falls into the “evil” category of women. The printing on this work is technically superb, with blindprinting in the scroll as well as in the larger cartouche. There is a heavy layer of deluxe mica applied to the whole print except for the area of the red title cartouche.
Condition: Excellent impression, and color; good condition. Left margin trimmed and lightly backed.
