The virtuous nurse Otsuji (Shizue) prays for the survival of Botaro beneath a waterfall, creating virtue for him by suffering under the icy waters. Note similarities to Yoshitoshi design of the same scene (1892, 36 Ghosts). Beautifully printed, with hand-applied gofun splashes as a finishing touch. She is portrayed with a ghostly grey pallor. One of Kunichika’s most emotionally compelling works. Rare.
