Kasamatsu Shirō: Spring Rain at Kinokuni Mound 紀の国塚 梅雨 (SOLD)
Artist: Kasamatsu Shirō (1898-1991)
Title: Spring Rain at Kinokuni Mound 紀の国塚 梅雨
Date: 1938
We see a dramatic silhouette of a large pine tree, standing out against a light drizzle. Its dark silhouette against the fine rain is dramatic and exact, and its bark has been beautifully printed. Two pedestrians walk by, holding umbrellas aloft. Rather scarce to find as a first edition, as here, with the Watanabe seal used between 1930-1942, right margin, as most examples are postwar. The rain is very effectively printed, and the overall printing in this first edition is much superior to later editions. There is a pencil annotation at bottom that reads “Kinokunizaka= Nyubai= Near Akasaka”. This might have some accuracy, as we could not find any place that bears the name Kinokunizaka in modern map searches.
