Kasamatsu Shiro 紫浪: Shinbashi in Rain (First Edition) (SOLD)
Artist: Kasamatsu Shiro 紫浪 (1898-1991)
Title: Shinbashi in Rain Date: 1935
Scene of a stylish street corner in the Shimbashi area of Tokyo in early Shôwa. We take in the two women in kimono holding traditional umbrellas, and the man to their right in an overcoat who wears geta but carries a western umbrella. We see only a few thin silver streaks to indicate the fine rainfall. The street is slick with rain, and the puddles reflect the lights of the restaurants and the charming street lamp. Shimbashi Station was the site of Japan’s first railway line; we seem to see streetcar tracks laid into the street in the foreground. In 1934, the Tokyo Underground Railway extended to Shimbashi Station. These prewar scenes of Tokyo show us what life looked at prior to the destruction of World War II. With the earliest Watanabe seal for this work, in use between 1930-1942.
