Title: Dusk at Futago 内 二子の黄昏

Series: Eight Views in the Suburbs of Tokyo 東京近郊八景  Date: 1939

Three men depicted in shadow cast their fishing lines into the shallow river from the rocky sandbar in the middle of the riverbed. This must be Futako Bridge, which crosses the Tama River in Kanagawa, in the outskirts of Tokyo. Created only using tones of purple, blue and grey, the artist has perfectly captured the time when our eyes can no longer see colors clearly, but can make out shadows and silhouettes. A few lights glow a very pale yellow from the bridge and buildings along the shore. This portion of the riverbank today actually looks somewhat the same, as it is part of a green space that includes Tamagawa Futako Bridge Park. A scarce wartime design with the earliest Watanabe seal for this work, in use between 1930-1942.
