Jun'ichiro Sekino: Station Shono; (White) Rain Shower on the Tokaido (Sold)
Artist: Junichiro Sekino (1914-1988)
Title: Station Shono; (White) Rain Shower, Number 46
Series: Shin Tokaido Gojusan Tsugi no Uchi (New Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido)
Date: 1962
From the landmark series “Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido”, we feel subtle echoes of Hiroshige in the pouring rain, the bent bamboo and the opened umbrella that are glimpsed between the diagonal cluster of tiled rooftops of the traditional buildings. A terrific cat’s eye perspective, perhaps, this shows Sekino’s sophisticated mastery of design. With no signs of modern concrete, we are taken back in time to Hiroshige’s day. This series was begun in 1959 and completed 1974. Soon after Sekino completed this series, he received the Ministry of Education award for “Maturity in using every possible technique in woodblock printing, Japanese traditional art, and the recreation of the old 53 Stations in the light of the present day”. Sekino is one of the greatest artists of the 20th c. sosaku hanga movement, and his prints are in many museum collections, including the MFA Boston, the British Museum LACMA and others.
