Four Peonies in a boldly patterned red-and-blue vase stand out against a textured black ground. See the Minneapolis Institute of Art for their example from the Schweitzer collection, which bears the same seals. The Muller collection contained both 1st edition examples of this design by Kawaguchi and Sakai, which generally had limited edition numbers, and this version, which we can presume were printed in the early 1930s, when Kawaguchi had split from his former partner. With the rich, velvety colors and textures that this publisher excelled at.
