“Ise”. The poem is by the 9th century poetess known as the Lady of Ise. Two well-dressed beauties admire the view of Naniwa inlet and the rice fields beyond. Three workmen are busy laying roofing tiles, the shape of the tiles echoing the squares of the rice paddies in the distance.

The poem was translated by Morse to read: Even for a space Short as a joint of tiny reed From Naniwa’s marsh, We must never meet again In this life? This, do you ask? Although Hokusai knew western perspective, here he has chosen Japanese perspective.

Condition: Excellent impression and color, very good condition. Light center fold.
