We see Minamoto no Tôru (822-895) enjoying the view of a sickle-shaped moon over his extensive landscape garden in the company of two other noblemen. Tôru was the son of the Emperor Saga, and he created an artificial lake in imitation of Shigama Bay as part of the grounds around his palace. Here he seems very pleased with the result This design is in unusually fine condition, with the woodgrain strongly evident in the sky.
