Hiroshige: Moto-Hachiman Shrine, Sumamura (Sold)
Artist: Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858)
Title: Moto-Hachiman Shrine, Sumamura
Series: One Hundred Famous Views of Edo: Meisho Edo Hyakkei
Date: 1856
We see only the stone torii, or entrance gate, to the famous Moto-Hachiman Shrine, lower right, as our viewpoint is from the shrine itself. The pine-lined embankment leads to Fukagawa. This area was reclaimed from the sea in the 1600s, and here is still mostly a wetland. Hiroshige’s famous flowing diagonals are fully in evidence in this peaceful view. This is an early impression, with mica highlights in the roadway and in the title cartouche.
Condition: Excellent impression and color. Very good condition. Barely visible center fold.
