Pristine and peaceful view of Lake Suwa, located in present-day Nagano Prefecture.  A unique strength of Hiroshige was his innate ability to create peaceful scenes that calm the mind with their balance and symmetry. The eye is guided slowly towards the peak of Mt. Fuji, almost the way the boatmen are steadily guiding their crafts on the calm lake. Strong woodgrain is visible in the water and sky, and extra bokashi details showcase the extreme care and skill of the printers and are evidence of a very early impression. Hokusai also created a view of Lake Suwa in his “36 Views of Mount Fuji” series, but the two views could almost not be more different.
