Hiroshi Yoshida 吉田博: Glittering Sea 光る海 (Sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Yoshida Hiroshi (1876-1950)
Title: Glittering Sea 光る海
Date: 1926

Two sailboats cross the shining waters of the Seto Inland Sea, the unseen sun sparkling in a brilliant swath of reflected light. This work is very highly sought after by Japanese collectors, as this design was known to have been displayed in the Kensington Palace office of the late HRH Princess Diana. (https://yoshida-exhn.jp/highlight-bk/) Hiroshi’s colors, as always, are perfectly on the mark in terms of how this scene would look to the viewer in person. As this work is signed in ink in Japanese (without his additional romaji signature in pencil), this work was probably intended for the Japanese market. In the process of being sold in Japan, someone wrote the title and Yoshida’s name in ink at the bottom. Provenance: From the collection of a member of the US Occupation forces who bought this print in the late 1940s and never had it framed. With perfect, unfaded colors.

Condition: Excellent impression, color and condition. Title and name written in Romaji in bottom margin at the time of the original sale of the print.
