A powerful eagle soars over the wintry snowscape of Edo Bay. Considered one of the “best three” designs of this series, conventionally ranked with Ohashi and Foxfires at Ôji (according to Henry Smith II). We can see here how strongly Hiroshige’s prints influenced major western artists, such as in the cropping of the large foreground figure and the unusual (bird’s eye!) viewpoint. Hiroshige’s prints were collected by van Gogh, Manet, Monet, and Whistler, among others. It is difficult to overstate the influence of Hiroshige on the development of late 19th century western art.
