“As returning geese cross the chill moonlit sky, we can see the distant roofs of the Nightless City, set off as a separate world by the bank of rose-tinged clouds beneath. This is the Yoshiwara, the destination of most of those traveling below along the Nihon Embankment, whose very name implied a trip to the pleasure quarters.” (Henry Smith, II). Exquisite first edition, with soft clouds beneath the moon and a green tinge to the “Looking-Back Willow” at far right.

Here crowds of men visit the teahouses and hire palanquins en route to the Yoshiwara.
