Title: Rain in Maekawa, Sôshû  相州前川の雨
Series: Selection of Views of the Tokaido (Tokaido fûkei senshû)

A single pedestrian walks past a row of traditional prewar Japanese buildings, the soft glow of their windows creating beautiful reflections on the rainy street. The rain, sky, trees and street are masterfully printed and are most evocative of a rainy summer evening in a quiet town. Hasui was a master at evoking the experience of being at a specific place during a specific time of day and season, during a specific type of weather. This work is not often available in the first edition, as here, with the Watanabe seal left margin. Even the MFA and AIC examples lack the early Watanabe seal.
