Title: Wadahama Kagawa Prefecture 香川県和田浜

A man leads an oxcart down a shaded road as the sun casts its final pink rays on a house to the left. Kagawa Prefecture is on the island of Shikoku and is located on the Seto Inland Sea, facing the larger island of Honshu. It is often difficult to find the current-day locales with the same titles that Hasui gave to a place, and this is no exception. There is a place called Toyohamacho-wadahama that is located in Kagawa Prefecture, so perhaps that is the current name of this location. Although much more developed today, there do seem to many farms in the area. This is one of the last 20 designs that Hasui created during his long career, and one could perhaps read into the design that Hasui may feel that he is in the sunset of his life.  We might also notice with poignancy that the figure is leaving the viewer behind. First edition Watanabe seal for this design, lower right, in red.
