Narazaki wrote: “The silhouetted form of a rickshaw is reminiscent of the work of Kiyochika. Elements such as the handling of the lights, the bridge damp in the downpour and the swaying reflections of the lights are also in a Kiyochika style. Only the mood of the torrential rain, created by the use of the baren, is not encountered in Kiyochika’s work.” The way the pouring rain has been printed is unique in Hasui’s oeuvre. A scarce and evocative night scene, bearing the earliest seal Watanabe seal, from one of Hasui’s finest series. Completely unfaded.
