Hasui 巴水 : Dawn Snow at the Port of Ogi, Sado 雪の明ぼの (Sold)

A fishing village seems to sleep beneath a blanket of pure, undisturbed snow, the sky tinged with the deep pink of a clear dawn. We see a number of small wooden fishing boats pulled up to shore, but not a single footprint mars the pristine setting.  As Narazaki notes “it stands out for its stage-like decorativeness.” Hasui designed six other works illustrating Sado Island. Sado island is the largest island in the Sea of Japan, and was historically a place of exile for political dissidents, beginning with the poet Hozumi no Asomi Oyu in 722. It is extremely rare to find this work with completely unfaded color, as here. The  museum example with color closest to this in the intensity of the pink is the Balcer example at the VMFA.

Condition: Very good impression, color and condition. Some loss of pink in sky.
