Yoshitoshi: Drawing of Warrior in Water (Sold)
Artist: Tsukioka Yoshitoshi
Title: Drawing of Warrior in Water
Date: ca. 1868
A warrior grasps a rope with his left hand, fighting turbulent waves as he spits out water and eyes his goal with determination. His hair is wet, and his right arm is drawn in at least two positions. His sword hilt may be seen at his side. The size of the figure and the style of the drawing suggest that it may have been intended for the series “Kaidai hyaku sensô” (Yoshitoshi’s Selection of One Hundred Warriors), done in 1868. Scholars have noted that despite the innovation of this series, it was not completed after the first 65 designs. Important preparatory drawing for an unpublished woodblock print. With red under-drawing.
Condition: Very good condition. Unbacked.
Dimensions: 32.2 x 24.3 cm
