Kuniyoshi: Actor Drawing
Artist: Utagawa Kuniyoshi
Title: Actor Drawing
Date: ca 1840s
A kabuki actor turns to face the audience. Kuniyoshi was a master of communicating volumes with an economy of line. We see the outlines of his formal garb, the hilts of his two swords and the formality of the wig he wears. It is possible that this is Ichikawa Ebizo V. The German writing at the bottom seems to indicate that this drawing was in the collection of the artist Ernst Bahn, Munster.
