Drawing for a book. This page concerns ancient Chinese martial artists. Two men in front are sparring with wooden swords, while two men in back look on. One holds a Chinese-style fan and has a beard. A figure top right had been drawn facing away, but Yoshitoshi abandoned this for the head of a man who faces the action. Yoshitoshi’s drawing technique usually began with a red under-drawing of the figure unclothed, with the more finished drawing going over it in sumi (ink). There is a lot of excitement packed into a small surface area. With the large red seal of Toshikata, Yoshitoshi’s favorite student.

Condition: Excellent condition. Lightly backed.
