The young 14th century emperor Gokomatsu fell in love with a woman who eventually bore him a son. Due to the jealousy and intrigue of the court, and distrust of her family loyalty, she was falsely accused of carrying a knife and thereby removed from the palace. Here we see two ladies-in-waiting “discovering” a hidden knife, the emperor watching from behind a screen. The woman’s child grew up to become the famous Zen master Ikkyu (1394-1481).
