Kasamatsu Shiro 紫浪: Evening Sky, Suwa Shrine, Nippori 夕空 日暮里 諏訪神社 (First edition)
Artist: Kasamatsu Shiro 紫浪 (1898-1991)
Title: Evening Sky, Suwa Shrine, Nippori 夕空 日暮里 諏訪神社 (First edition)
Date: 1932
Our view is at twilight, the sky filled with purple clouds, and a crescent moon suspended above. We are ascending the steps to the Suwa Shrine, the stone torii in front of us, and the shrine peeking out at right. We see a woman carrying a baby in the middle distance, and behind them are trees and soft lights that are just beginning to glow near the horizon. This work is beautifully printed by Watanabe’s prewar printers, so it has lovely depth and complexity to it. With the Watanabe seal in the right margin that was in use between 1932 and 1941, this may be considered a first edition. One rarely finds these prewar printings in unfaded condition on the market today, and the superior, velvety printing demonstrates the difference that it makes.
