A red tree poses against a brilliant, sparkling golden backdrop. Hoshi created a unique technique to render such astonishing effects using woodblocks. These included gold leaf, oil paints and a blowtorch used on the edges of the blocks. His techniques have been imitated, but the power and beauty of Hoshi’s tree designs are inimitable.
