Title: Kurahara Saisuke Dodges Gunfire
Series: Biographies of Modern Men (Kinsei kyôgiden)

Kurihara Saisuke lifts his leg as he literally dodges bullets. The Japanese utilized guns in their warfare beginning in the 16th century, when they imported a type of matchlock-configured arqebus firearm from the Portuguese. The text   was written by Sanzan-tei Arindo. This series was one of Yoshitoshi’s earliest major efforts, and profiles the leading figures in a violent feud that erupted between two gambling rings in 1849. Today these figures would be considered anti-heroes.
