Title: Okawa Kumoemon Carrying a Large Bow; Homing Geese at Okawa
Series: Heroes for the Eight Views (Gôketsu hakkei, 豪傑八罫)
Date: 1847-48
As noted on the Kuniyoshi Project website, Japan’s famous eight views were adopted from eight famous Chinese views; these are the autumn moon, lingering snow, evening glow, vesper bells, returning boats, clearing weather, night rain and homing geese. In this series these views are compared with eight Japanese heroes. This view is of Homing Geese at Okawa, and the hero is the archer Okawa Kumoemon, who carries a large, wrapped bow on his shoulder. The text surrounding him must be relating stories of his exploits.
