A springtime profusion of blooming cherry trees surround visitors as they admire the sights near Kiyomizu Hall of Kan-eiji Temple in Ueno Park. Modeled after the iconic Kiyomizudera in Kyoto, we see the red viewing platform extending out to offer a fabulous view of the pond and its surroundings. The famous “Moon Pine” is shown at left, the subject of another print in this series. As noted by Smith, the pine trees have been elongated upwards in order to emphasize the vertical format, and also to fill the space in the sky and balance the blossoms that fill the lower right. This is one of the only buildings from the original Kan-eiji Temple grounds that exists in its near-original form, and a new “moon pine” was planted in 2011 that echoes the shape of the original.
