Hasui 巴水: Yugashima, Ito 伊豆湯ケ島
Artist: Kawase Hasui 川瀬巴水 (1883-1957)
Title: Yugashima, Ito 伊豆湯ケ島 Date: 1936
Spring view of the river near Yugashima hot springs in the town of Amagi, Yugashima. Our view is of the smoothly flowing Kano River, the trees and hillsides bursting with a palette of fresh green. Blooming cherry trees offer a burst of pink in the center. Today the area remains blessedly nature-filled and is replete with rustic inns that retain a nostalgic ambiance. Yugashima is now in Shizuoka Prefecture in central Izu peninsula. Hasui rarely gives us a perspective that is entirely free of humans or human constructions, so he must have felt completely enveloped by nature in this place. With the Watanabe “D” seal right margin, in use between 1932 and 1941, so this may be considered a first edition.
