Hasui: The Yama Temple, Sendai (Sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Kawase Hasui
Title: The Yama Temple, Sendai
Date: 1919

Experimental-feeling work done entirely in blue, this evening design evokes the aizuri-e of Hiroshige and Eisen. Hasui wrote “This mountain temple, the Ryumonzando Unzen, is situated in Nanakita. Nanakita is about two ri from Sendai. It is a fairly old temple complex consisting of a Butsuden [Buddha Hall], sanmon [main gate] and Kaizan hall. The corridor linking these three structures is especially interesting. I purposely executed this work in blue as so to convey the feeling of a soft moonlit night, as if in a dream.” See also Hasui’s later design of this temple in 1933, Hotei #295.
