Title: Tennô Temple, Osaka 旅みやげ第三集 大坂天王寺
Date: 1927 昭和二年
A moment of contemplative solitude as a man walks towards the Tennô Temple grounds, large flakes of snow falling softly all around as dusk falls. Narazaki describes this print “A man is dressed in a full-length coat and holds an umbrella as he walks across newly fallen snow. The vermilion-lacquered corridor of the Tennô Temple stands somewhat apart, the Kindo [main hall] superimposed over the five-storeyed pagoda. Both hall and pagoda tower against the cold, snowy sky. The three layers of bokashi are skillfully executed and are effective in contributing to the mood of the work.” The Shitennoji Temple is Japan’s oldest official temple, founded in 593. Most of the buildings have been destroyed over the centuries and have been rebuilt in the late 20th century. The Watanabe seal in the left margin was in use in the 1930s.
