A small town in a mountain province is hit by torrential sweeps of rain which fall in dramatic, diagonal sheets. According to Narazaki “The design limns a miserable night in a mountain province, the torrential rain conveyed through the unusual use of the baren [pad used to apply color during printing].” Applying the edge of the circular baren to the back of the print using a block with nearly dry colorant seems to have been chosen to give the rain more depth, making each print unique, as the sheets of rain differ in every print. Two bright windows provide hints of cheerful refuge, and one lone pedestrian heads in their direction. Suhara is in Nagano Prefecture.
