Hasui: Nagare Pleasure Quarter, Kanazawa (Kanazawa Nagara no kuruwa) (Sold)

Title: Nagare Pleasure Quarter, Kanazawa 旅みやげ第一集 金沢ながれのくるわ
Date: Autumn 1920 (Taishô kyû aki)
Hasui himself wrote: “There is a pleasure district in the Kasuhe district of Kanazawa called Nagare by the locals because it faces the Asano River. Somehow the gurgling of the water and the sensuous sounds of the shamisen are full of sorrow. The low-hanging crescent moon and the shadows of the pine are indicative of a misty evening in autumn.” The printing is exquisitely subtle and creates an atmosphere very evocative of the time and place. Provenance: From the personal collection of the late Hasui scholar Hisao Shimizu, former curator of the Folk Museum of Ota City. This exact print is shown in the 2013 Japanese catalog “The Art of Kawase Hasui’ (Tokyo Bijutsu), page 25, plate 6.
