Hasui 巴水: Lake Yamanaka 山中湖 (Yamanakako) First Edition (Sold)
Artist: Kawase Hasui 川瀬巴水 (1883-1957)
Title: Lake Yamanaka 山中湖 (Yamanakako)
Date: 1936, November
Mount Fuji in silhouette, glowing with the parting rays of the setting sun. We feel close to the great mountain, perhaps even protected. A single window glows yellow in the evening twilight. Rather unusually, this work is done almost entirely in shades of purple, somehow evoking Hiroshige’s aizuri works, but with purple as the dominant color instead of blue. This color palette is the same as the colors in the work from the Balcer collection at the VMFA. First edition, with the earliest Watanabe seal for this design, in use between 1930 and 1942. This is a rather scarce print, rarely seen coming to market.
