A seated man in a traditional straw raincoat holds his fishing pole out over a gently rippling Lake Matsubara. Most of Hasui’s wartime scenes are amazingly peaceful and show bucolic scenes of traditional Japan. Perhaps they served an escapist function, reminding everyone of happier times. This Watanabe seal was in use in the late 1940s. Provenance: From the personal collection of René Balcer.
